What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
As part of the academic F2 programme in YG, the trainees spend 4 month in the department of Sexual Health and HIV, based in Menai Unit, YG. The department has two Consultants – Dr Ushan Andrady, Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine/HIV and Dr Meena Sethupathi, Consultant in Integrated Sexual Health/HIV. The department has a dynamic clinical team comprising of Specialty Doctors, ST3/4, specialist nurses and HIV pharmacist managing all STIs, contraception and both outpatient and inpatient HIV care. The department is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, clinical audit and research.
The trainee will be working alongside a small friendly team in a purpose adapted outpatient department, gaining broader clinical experience in the management of STIs and HIV, learn about all methods of contraception and if desired, work towards gaining a future qualification in contraception (Diploma/Letter of Competence from FRSH).
The trainees have the opportunity to attend both regional and national audit group meetings and undertake speciality audits. The department delivers the nationally accredited STI Foundation course in North Wales and also an approved centre for STI competency training in Wales. There are close links with Liverpool Sexual Health, HIV, Infectious Diseases and School of Tropical Medicine and Liverpool HIV Pharmacology group via Mersey, Cheshire and North Wales HIV clinical Network. Trainees have the opportunity to attend both Liverpool and North Wales HIV MDT meetings and also to undertake joint clinical research projects.
The department runs an annual sexual health awareness campaign throughout the month of September (www.sextember.org). The trainee will have the opportunity to get involved with this exciting campaign and outreach sexual health promotion activities.
