What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
During your 4 month rotation, you will gain experience in both oncology and haematology. Flexibility and team work on Alaw ward are key, and with your colleagues, you will support one another to ensure patients are seen and tasks completed. You will gain experience in the complications of cancer, its treatment as well as end of life care. As well as the main inpatient unit, you will gain experience in the day therapy unit as well as the new oncology assessment unit. By the end of the placement you will have improved your knowledge, skills and confidence in general oncology, haematology, oncological emergencies and end of life care, including difficult conversations and when to refer to the specialist palliative care team for support. You will be welcome and encouraged to attend clinic in the afternoons when the ward is well staffed.

Ward rounds and work and Clerking/Reviewing patients on the Day Unit. Leading the twice daily board rounds.

Tuesday – Consultant Support & Board Round

Thursday – Junior/ Clinical Fellow Ward Round
Friday – CUP MDT. All Consultants see their patients Pall Care Ward Round
On call requirements:
Medical on Calls- 4-5 weekends/4 months (some 13:00-21:00 ward cover, some 8:00-21:00 MAU). Also occasional 08:00-21:00 weekdays on MAU (about 1 in 10)
The Onc/Haem Consultants do weekend on-calls on Alaw and RV all patients.
