What type of work to expect and learning opportunities:
The Department of Breast Surgery at YG comprises of 2 consultants. There is one F2 in the
department allocated to the two consultants. During this rotation you will gain exposure to and experience in the management of common benign and malignant breast disease. The
placement will allow you to develop the majority of the competencies required in the curriculum.
Clinical duties are as follows:
• Initial assessment of internal referral and management of breast infection in the acute setting
• Maintaining hospital notes and drug charts
• Prescribing drugs
• Preparing patients for surgery
• Exposure to breast surgery in the operating theatre
• Preparing discharge summaries
• Initial assessment and management of ward patients who become unwell
• Assisting in ward rounds
• Exposure to outpatient clinic activities
• Requesting investigations, documenting results and acting upon them
• Communication with patients and their relatives
• Participation in audit and governance meetings
• Exposure to Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
• Team working
• Fulfil work based assessment requirements of the placement e.g. CBD, mini CEX, DOPs
• Participation on the general on call rota
Your typical working pattern in this placement could be:
You will attend weekly clinics, MDT meetings and theatre sessions and review acute internal referrals with supervision from the consultant and Breast care nurses.
You will participate in a 1 in 8 on-call day time rota with the general surgical team
There are no night duties in this post.
